Looking to build a upper mid-range gaming PC

Ok, so I built a PC a while back, and I just felt the need to upgrade to something better. I had an FX 4130 and GTX 650 Ti 2gb, but I wanted more. So, what I decided was that I was going to sell my PS4 for 300, and also add in 200 that I already have. At first, I wanted to buy an R9 270x, but then I saw the GTX 970 and thought, oh man I need that joint, but I settled for a used R9 290. Not the newest, but top of the midrange. I also have my eye on a 7950, so it could all be good. Anyways, I'm going with an FX 8320, but I was reading about that pentium that came out and how it almost matches an i7 when oc'ed to 4.2Ghz, so I was having doubts about that. All I really want to do on this PC is game and do homework, with a little Linux mixed in there (just giving Ubuntu, Fedora, and Steam OS a whir).

-Should I get the 970 (320), used R9 270x (140), HD 7950 (?), or the used R9 290 (220)?

-Is the FX 8320 a good budget choice, or should I consider an i5 or the pentium?

-Will my build last me 2 or so years?

this will depends on your budget, if your budget will be $500
the best you can get is i3 with r9 270x.

today I dont find a reason to get r9 290 / HD79** over nvidias (counterpart at price) card today.
970 is a great card at present so i should say get MSI gtx 970 twin frozr 4gb, and there will be a 960 in few weeks for just $250-$300, you might want it.
i5 is the best for gaming purpose

OCed Pentium doesn't come anywhere near an i7, don't know where you read that, single core clock speeds, yes maybe, but you certainly can't compare a dual core with Hyperthreaded quad core. FX 8 is fine for gaming, you'd need a new MoBo for i5, Pentium won't be worth the investment, and both would add to the cost. What is your current MoBo?

Also, R9 290 is a high end card, not mid range. HD 7950 is comparable R9 280, R9 270X is the weakest amongst your choices, GTX 970 is the most powerful card, better than 290, and you can afford it, with a FX 8. So I'd go for GTX 970 with FX 8.

Thanks for the info.I think I might be going with the gtx 960 or gtx 970. I'll go with the FX 8320 as well.

i think it will depends on his current components if he will stay in amd or not. if he will, then its a fine build.
and i am agree with dual core incomparable to quadcore hyper threading.

Yep, FX 8 and GTX 960/70 would make for a good combo. Again, what is your MoBo?

Well, if the rumors are true, and the 960 is coming jan-march, I'd rather not wait. I want to make it in time for Steam winter sales. What now? Is the wait worth it for sub 780 performance, or is the r9 290 looking better?

As expected, the MoBo is not great for FX 8, you can upgrade to FX 6 at most, it has only a 4 power phase design and no heatsinks on VRMs, so you shouldn't put a 125W TDP FX 8 in that. FX 6 and GTX 970 would be a good upgrade, as FX 6 is $110 and 970 is $350.

Are you sure it wont bottleneck though? And will FX 6 last me a few years?
