So I am looking to build a 4k build sometime soon (within a couple months) and I was wondering what you guys think about different cards in SLI/Crossfire and what would be best for 4k.

I'm debating between the 290x's and the 970's because they are around the same price these days, I've heard quite a lot about the 290x's being better at higher resolutions, so I was thinking they might be a good choice for 4k. If there are any other video card suggestions i'd be happy to hear them, but i'd like to stay under $900 in that area if possible.

For processors, i'm looking at the
FX-9590
i7-4790K
or the
i7-5820K

Depending on the chosen card, would it be better to go with a FX-9590 with the 290x's or would performance be the same on a similar Intel processor?

Suggested motherboards or monitors would also be appreciated. =D

I would suggest SLI of two 980s

GTX 970 SLI is gonna be much better than R9 290X Crossfire.
NEVER,NEVER EVER EVER!! get the FX-9590. It is extremely overpriced,it needs more than twice the amount of power at full load than a 4790K and it literally melts under the CPU cooler(if you gotta bad one though).
I would get 2xGTX 970 and the 5820K or better,the 5930K and a Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4 MoBo and some G.Skill 4x4GB DDR4 RAM.

Agreed here. Fx 9590 is over priced and it draws too much power. Intel i5 would be much better choice with overclocking. SLI of 970 or 980 is recommended.

I'd avoid the FX it eats power like no tomorrow and will force you to spend more on the PSU and cooler.

290X or 970 it really depends on what you using it for
http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/geforce-gtx-970-sl...

But the 970 takes a lot less power and run cooler so I would prefer that.

edit: the GTX 980 costs well over $500 each so that would be beyond his budget. Not worth the extra ~$200 over the 970.

even tri SLI 980s are not ready for 4k. unless you fancy playing games @ 30fps or playing really old games. just saying.

Alright guys thanks for all the help, I think i'm going to end up going with the 970's due to the price for performance, I do have one other question though about the Processors.

For the i7-5820K I'll need to get a Z99 MoBo as well as 16gb of 2133mhz DDR4 Ram
where as
For the i7-4790k I'll need to get a Z97 MoBo as well as 16gb of 2133mhz DDR3 Ram

The thing is, it'll cost me around $250-$300 more to do the i7-5820k setup, so i was curious whether it would be worth it to get DDR4 Ram, the Hexacore, and the Z99 Mobo for a gaming PC. How much improvement would you see with the i7-5820k setup other than upgrade-ability for the future, and would the higher clock speed on the i7-4790k be better suited for gaming in a UHD system.

Thanks once again for the help guys.

First, it is X99 not Z99. Don't go for X99 build merely for DDR4. Stick with Z97 and DDR3. Spent the saving on creating a SLI. Z97 and i5 4790k would be enough for UHD. Alsy why are you considering i7? If only for gaming then stick with i5 4690k.

I agree with EasyLover here,stick with the Z97 setup.And go for an i5 4690K,if gaming is what you do.For editing,go for the i7 4790K.

For gaming, an i5 4690k would be fine. Maybe if you were video editing get an i7 or if heavily into it, get a hex core i7.

Alright thanks again and good to know, I might end up freeing up a bit of money for the video cards, so if I was to get more, would you recommend just going with 2x 980's, or would it be better to have 3x 970's. It's actually cheaper to get 3x 970's where I live right now, so that's why I was wondering. And you guys think an i5 can handle dual 970's? I'm assuming you'd probably want an i7 if you were going to go with 3x 970's or dual 980's but I'm not too knowledgeable on this topic.

Thanks again for the help, you guys are awesome =D

I'd start with one 970. If need be, I'd add another.

I wouldn't run 4K. Maybe 1440p on a 27in monitor.

I'm sort of person who prefers to have a single or max dual GPU setup not more than that. SLI of two 970 would be good enough for gaming at 144p pr 4k with multiple displays. Get 2 970s and i5.

Obviously everyone agrees that your best options are the i7-4790K http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KPRWAX8 and SLI 980's if it's in your budget. FX series CPU's are pretty much outdated at this point and not even worth looking into except for a few rare occasions.

If you cannot afford a pair of 980's then you would be better off getting a couple ASUS GTX 970 STRIX http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NJ9BJ8G cards as opposed to 290's. Again, if you're budget bound and can get an amazing deal on a pair of Sapphire 290's under $250 each then it may be worth getting.

MSI GTX 970 4G is a better option here in mho.

I was going to get a second 290 for xfire but the fine people on this site have convinced me to go SLI 970s. I play at 1440p and from all the reviews I've seen the SLI 970s outperform Xfire 290s and even 290x's. I'd def go for this especially at this price range it's a complete steal. I can't wait to try these on my Sony 55" 4k TV.

Also all the reviews I saw the Strix was behind the MSI by 1-2 FPS, but the Strix has better cooling. I'll be getting the Strix because it comes with amazing features, a good OC, looks very nice and super sturdy with a great looking backplate.

I opt for ASUS over MSI because they have the same performance for the most part and ASUS has MUCH better customer support. MSI's biggest downfall in this situation is their support.
