I just bought a 20" inch hdmi Samsung. The monitor has two ports, vga and hdmi.

However, monitor cannot detect signal with hdmi. I have tried connecting the cable to my r9 270x, , my old 9800gt, and integrated card, but no luck.

Before I suspect the faulty cable, I'd like to know if my pc lacks driver or other utilities or bios setting before hdmi takes effect.

I have upgraded bios and graphic driver but no change. Any help would be appreciated.

Likely a faulty cable, as in most cases, even if GPU connection is not detected, integrated graphics are almost always detected. Replacing the cable will solve the issue.

No settings in BIOS is needed for HDMI. Please use another cable. Which version of HDMI cable do you have?

I'm not sure. But the plug fits the both monitor and pc port perfectly. I think it is micro hdmi. Anyway, how to notice the different type of hdmi cable?

The error can be of faulty wires, internally. Also, HDMI is on left while micro HDMI is on right:

Or say HDMI on top while micro on bottom.

Thanks for the image.
Mine is on the left. Then, how to know which port belongs to the hdmi or micro hdmi?

HDMI socket is bigger, Micro HDMI is much smaller, like this:

Thanks.
I'm sure it's not micro, then.
I also have hdmi to vga adapter, but it doesn't work either. Is this also faulty adapter? Not to make another topic, but this makes me feel so helpless dealing with this hdmi thing...

I'm not so sure, but HDMI-VGA should've worked if it's not faulty. And when you've tested with different cards, onboard, updating drivers, etc, I'm not certain its anything but the ports phyisically, if not cables.

Latest update. I happened to try connecting laptop to the monitor using hdmi cable, and it worked. This makes sure that the cable is not damaged.

It can happen. My old HDMI cable was working very well with my previous gtx 660 and samsung led monitor but it did not work neither on my built-in gpu nor on laptop to tv. I just changed the hdmi cable and it worked on all platforms/areas. I earlier asked about version of hdmi. Is it 1.2 or 1.2a or 1.3 or 1.4 please?

My gpu lists hdmi port version 1.4. I don't know what the cable version is. How to know?

Hard to determine without packing info. Mine was 1.3 and it gave me problems with display on some devices. Switched to 1.2 version and it worked on all devices.

I just bought a high speed 1.4 hdmi cable, it works for integrated gpu. But it doesn't on my external gpu. I'm guessing it i driver issue since now there is no "no signal hdmi" on the screen.

I suspect the monitor is undetected by my gpu. ATI catalyst says it is CRT monitor after detect displays. I recall it was S20D300 when I use igpu.

I'm trying to find a driver for my monitor.

There will be a input signal change button on your samsung monitor. Tap it change the input to Digital.

Could it be bad port on GPU?

That's the worst case. I think it's 4 months old. Can I return it?

I'm sorry I wasn't clear before. I plugged both RGB and HDMI cable to PC and monitor. But the only one that works is RGB. When I switched to HDMI, the screen is blank, but it doesn't say "no signal". Could it be compatibility issue, because my monitor is not 1080p ready?

Both at a time or checked both with one at a time? Being not 1080p ready won't hurt actually.

Both at a time. I've checked individually. RGB ran fine, but HDMI did not. I plugged them both to see if HDMI would work after installing certain drivers (the monitor should be on, so I used RGB mode). But after installing driver and I switched to HDMI, the screen is still blank.

Two steps remaining here: Get other display if available and try to get output on hdmi, if it works then your current monitor is faulty, if it does not then gpu is faulty.

I'm sure it is the hdmi port on vga card. I tried connecting laptop to monitor via hdmi, and it worked. Integrated gpu to monitor, worked. The only thing that's not working is my hdmi via vga card.

Is hdmi worth RMA? Is it much better than RGB, or should I be satisfied with RGB? Because replacement takes too long.

Thanks for your help.

That would depend upon the resolution at which you are currently playing and your future res requirement. If it is 1080p then you can stick with this GPU, however if you would be playing at much higher res than 1080p or even 1440p then digital output would be required.

Thanks. I'll try to return it since I might need the port for higher res monitor should I buy one.

If card is in warranty, claim the warranty over the issue.

I don't think so. My graphic card is R9 270x.

I'm using a DVI-D to HDMI adapter, and it works! Yes, the problem is the HDMI port on my vga card.

Now I realize how hdmi is. Before, there were horizontal white flashings on the screen while playing Skyrim. Now there are none.

You mean DVI-D?

Yes. The hdmi port doesn't work. So the problem is not driver or compatibility issue.

I was just replying to another post on this thread. You could be using either of DVI ports depending upon availability.
