Hi guys,
I have a stable overclock on my FX8350 of 4.7ghz. It is running at 1.49v
My cpu temps on HWmonitor are about 51C at load and AMD overdrive is giving me about a 20C thermal margin. So... am I happy with these temps?
What I'm not too sure about is HW monitor is saying under - Temperatures, CPU - that I'm hitting 65C after an hour of Prime95. I presume this is socket temp, in which case It's acceptable or is it NB? And if so is this an ok temp for NB?

Last but not least if this is all good would you recommend trying to eek 4.8Ghz? at I'm guessing
1.5??V

Thanks guys

I have seen many claim the operating temperature for the FX-8350 is preferably below 60c, I have not as yet found an official statement from AMD as to the CPUs max temperature range.

http://products.amd.com/en-us/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx?id=809

CPU world in their FAQ section did say that the CPUs temperature range was 60c and lower.

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-FX-Series%20FX-8350.html#specs

Quote:
Safe CPU temperatures are 60 degrees Celsius and below. It may still run fine with CPU temperatures, exceeding 60C threshold by a few degrees. Running the FX-8350 close to 70 degrees and higher is not recommended.

My familiarity with AMD CPUs is that the cooler you can keep them, the more you can get out of them, but if you've had yours running at 65c you can be sure it's internally throttling to protect itself in every built in way the CPU is designed to protect itself.

You don't really think they're going to give you a 3 year boxed warranty without building protection into the CPU do you?

When those protective features are activated because of heat your CPU performance starts to dwindle, that's why some have been shocked that their overclock performance is worse than their stock performance, because the CPU is internally throttling back to protect itself.

51c is great 65c is not, I suggest a thermal monitoring program like Core Temp, because you need to find out exactly what your temperatures are running.

Personally I suggest keeping it under 60c and way under would be much better, which means either get better CPU cooling or lower your overclock.

Oh and AMD Overdrive sucks!

The best AMD overclocking is 100% manual BIOS overclocking.

Hi Ryan, Thanks for the reply mate.
I did A BIOS overclock but have been using Overdrive to monitor temperatures and CPU load. Alongside this I have also been using HW monitor, CPU-z and CoreTemp. They all seem to be giving me a core temperature of 51C under load.
My main query is what the other temp on HWmonitor represents, not FX8350 Package but the one that just says CPU. It is a temperature which doesn't correlate to any other temps on any other programs.

Also my computer is performing way better with this overclock.. especially in the ARMA games

Can you post a screenshot?

65c isn't great mate... 1.49v seems a little high for that clock as well. What are you cooling with? I know this isn't the 8350 and every chip is different, but i am running 1.0ghz (4.5)over stock on my FX6300 and my Vcore is at 1.39 under load with max temps of 51c at core, 61c at NB.

I wouldn't personally be comfortable using that Vcore on a daily basis... Even if you can get temps down I would feel the volt increase may have an impact on your Mobo lifespan.

Hi Rich, thanks for replying mate. I know that my chip isn't one of the good ones but if I lover the voltage even one more notch then I start to get failures on prime 95. It's core 6 every time. I'm happy with 4.7 tho. I'm using a h100i to cool the cpu. I think that the 65 must be the socket tho right? Or northbridge. Core temp shows the same numbers at HWmonitor does on the FX8350 Packet sensor.

Your packet core in hwmonitor is straight forward, Tmp01 is is the CPU also and Tmp02 is the North Bridge temp... That is usually good to 70c under load, however i find that readout to be inaccurate at times.

The strange thing is that I only get 2 temps one says cpu but is in the same section as the motherboard stuff and the other says fx8350 packet. The Packet is 51 and cpu 64c

What cooler are you using, thermal paste ect? Did you have any issues fitting it, and were you happy after fitting it?

Arctic silver 5 h100i and all went fine. I just want to know if anyone knows the difference between the two temps. Did you look at the picture I posted?

Hey Ricardo. That's good to hear. Do you know if the high temp is core, socket or northbridge?
Thanks

It is NB... However the readings from that sensor can be very temperamental and can be taken with a pinch of salt. I cannot imagine your voltage pushing the NB up that high unless there was a problem with the chip itself. I would try and take a physical test with a temp gun or something... Another test I have used with the NB in the past (make sure oyu are grounded first though) touch the NB itself, you should be able to keep your finger on it for a good 30 seconds..

Ok mate, the second one sound cheaper than the first so I'll give it a whirl.
Cheers
