how about building your own? you'll save money and get to decide for the parts and looks of the rig.

1) Any PC can be used for general purposes, even a server. What really makes a system a "gaming system" is the graphics card installed. I have a Core i5 CPU, but with no graphics card, it's not a gaming system outside of basic Flash games.
2) Don't need the i7 for gaming. The i5 is just as fast. The difference between the two is so small, better off spending the extra money into the graphics card.
3) I agree with Cons29. Building a gaming system can save you money versus buying one. The only systems where can you save money buying versus building are office / web systems.

well, that i do not know. I rarely look at small cases, the last i looked at is a bitfenix prodigy which i think is a very nice case. It is low, bit on a wide side. But then again, it depends on ones need and taste.

one thing to consider is, if size is important to you (maybe for portability?), is, is there a 970 that can fit a small case? whatever the case brand is.
i would suggest that you scout around different case brands, look for small ones that suits your taste/needs, then read some review and decide for yourself. or if possible, go for a bigger case (mid tower maybe) and you won't have much issue on whether it will fit or not.
again, just my 2 cents, and it depends on your priority, which is more important to you
