I have an old Dell xps 420. I wanted to keep the cases and drives and just upgrade mb, gpu, etc. but I hear that Dell is proprietary so no ATX mb will fit. Is that correct?

Assuming that is the case, I put together the following build. This is my first build and don't want to screw anything up. Can someone chime in and confirm that the parts are all compatible? Am I missing something? Something I should change out? I'm really close to my max budget. Thanks!

Cougar Case, fans and 4 MB Ram: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/ite...
AMD FX-8350 and GA-970A DS3P mb: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/ite...
ADATA 256GB SSD: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/ite...
Cheap DVD drive: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/ite...
R9 270X (with 3 games!): http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/ite...

I've got another Kingston 8 GB DDR3 RAM and a 1TB WD hardrive (and the OS). Also getting the necessary SATA cables. Anything else? Will the case come with the standoffs to install the mb?

With rebates and everything its about $700. Thanks everyone! PC will be used primarily for gaming - although not heavy gaming. I just want a system I can play newer games on for the next couple years.

Since you already have the RAM and the HDD, you can reuse them.

This build is also pretty good if you don't want the R9 290:
