Hello, I've been playing Skyrim on my computer since Christmas 2013 on my Dell XPS l502x, with an nvidia 540m driver, since I got it it has, after awhile freezes with a droning sound, the only way to stop it is to turn off my computer, and turn it on again, could this be attributed to the overheating? And if so is there any way to fix it? If nit, any ideas on what it might be?

Your gpu is capable of playing the game, but only at low settings at perhaps 720p.

So, first couple of questions:

What resolution/ settings are you playing the game at?
Are you able to play other games without a problem?

High texture, medium regular blur quality, high shadow detail, and high decal quality, also I edited in the original post, it is a 540m, not a 520m.

if its freezing with a buzzing sound you are likely crashing the video driver, though you could be freezing the cpu too but doubtful.

clean your laptop, you could be overheating. i would say take it apart but maybe not if your not comfortable doing this. get a can of compressed gas/air for electronics cleaning. use a paper clip and insert it where the fan is on the laptop. when using the compressed gas/air it is possible the speed of the air coming out the can will spin the fan blade faster than it is designed to spin and causing damage to it. use the paper clip to block the fan blades from spinning. dont spray the fluid in the can out either, that would be bad, you just want the air, so test it to before you blow in the air vents, and dont tip the can on its side.

otherwise you could try updating your video driver. go to the dell website and see if they have a newer graphics driver there. or you can test out using the latest nvidia mobility driver, but this might not work since laptops sometimes have custom drivers from the manufacture to work with other built in features.
