Display blacks out for a second then recovers

Hi,

Just upgraded my graphics card from a 780 to a 970, and have since developed a problem. My display seems to black out for a couple of seconds and then recover, during the blackout I can still hear any sound, but display just cuts to black no error message or anything.

It happens every time I open geforce experience, but not exclusively as it also happens occasionally while gaming, on the web or launching other programs. There is no message that the display driver has crashed and then recovered.

So far I have tried uninstalling geforce experience and all its components and then reinstalling, but this didn't fix the problem. Thinking of trying a different dvi port on the graphics card, as its unlikely to be cable or monitor as they were fine an hour previous with the 780.

My system:

cpu: i5 4670k
ram: 4x 4gb corsair vengence
mobo: asus z87 pro
gpu: gigabyte 970 g1
psu: corsair rm650

Many thanks for any help in advance,

Dinsy
