I am looking for a good wifi router good for gaming (xbox live) and going on the internet without lagging. I have a very slow router and I decided to just get a new one today, I would like it to be no more than $60, I could go a bit higher if I need it. I do not have a computer or a modem, I have a laptop, will I be able to get a router and just plug it into my laptop, or will I need a modem too? I heard that some routers come with a built-in modem, but if I need one please tell me if I can use it on a laptop. Thank for the help anyone can give me!

It is not the router that makes WiFi good or not it is your house. If you can get strong signal where you need it with little interference from neighbors or other devices you can plays games fair well over WiFi. If you are in the common situation where there is a lot of other people using WiFi near you or you have a number of WiFi devices in your house competing for bandwidth it will run very poorly. Browsing can tolerate poor wireless, gaming is extremely sensitive to poor wireless.

I am very confused by you talking about plugging a modem into your laptop.

In most system you need some form of modem...like cable of dsl. The exact type depends on what type of service you are getting there are a couple of variation on DSL and many...

In most system you need some form of modem...like cable of dsl. The exact type depends on what type of service you are getting there are a couple of variation on DSL and many cable companies only support a certain list of modem.

So you need to get a modem that works with the ISP. You plug that into the wire that comes into the house from the ISP. You then plug the output of the modem into the router. You can then connect to the router via WiFi or you can cable to the router with ethernet.

Now there are some modem that have a built in router so it is both the modem and the router in the same box. You have just eliminated the cable between the modem and the router it works and connects to your end equipment the same way.
