I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 runing Windows XP and wondered what alternative Operating-System is available now Microsoft no longer XP and it cannot be upgraded to Win 7

You can use Vista, but I've installed Windows 7 on a number of Inspiron E1705 (which is same as 9400) laptops.

HERE is a page that is helpful, and do check your specific CPU to determine if you can run 64 bit or are limited to the 32 bit version.
