I've always been happy with AMD technology, although it's clear to me that Intel is definitely winning the architecture arms race. I want the best possible option for gaming/streaming from AMD. I currently have a Phenom II x4 3.2Ghz. Is there a CPU from AMD that is worth the upgrade to, or should I invest in a cooler and OC my Phenom II further? If so, I'd like to push the CPU to 3.8Ghz safely; any suggestions are appreciated.

FX8350 is a worthy upgrade if your board supports it. If not may as well jump on Intel.

The 8350 would be a bit of an upgrade , but you might need a new board to get the most out of it . I run all AMD , 1100t , 1090t and 2 8350 .

To further my concern, I heard that AMD is working with some new technology. The bulldozer tech didn't turn out like they had hoped. New tech gets released quick, typically, so should I really buy a new CPU (a bit of an upgradde) when AMD says they've got something better in the works? Is the buy worth it now? Or is it wiser to buy a good cooler and squeeze by with an overclock? I'm torn.

They have nothing better in the works than the reworked Vishera FX83xx and up series since currently concentrating on APU's

You're good until 2016, before AMD puts out anything other than more advanced APUs.

To parrot what others have said, if you have a decent motherboard, it would be worth it to upgrade to an FX-83XX processor.

I was just looking at a crude timeline for what they're working on now. 2016 is what I was able to gather too. I think you guys have me convinced. Thanks to everyone for your input!

Answer is clear. FX 8350. The 8 cores will let you play games and record without breaking a sweat, however, the 8350 may have some trouble running some games such as Arma because Arma always likes taking a dump on AMD. So I'd say go with an intel i5, great for streaming and gaming. But if you really want AMD just get an FX 8350, if you're on a super budget I guess an FX 8320 might get the job done.

If you would have to replace your board anyway (you never mentioned what you have), and you're just looking to satisfy an upgrade itch, consider snagging an inexpensive 860K and FM2+ motherboard and give it a mild overclock. At ~4.4ghz it will give performance comparable to an i5-4440 in gaming.

Unfortunately, it looks like I have an AM3 Mobo. Even more unfortunate, I have a list of other upgrades that I wanted to make before I change out the CPU/Mobo. This is what I found: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?Ite...

Does this seem like a good way to go?

It is an OK way to go but I personally would keep the Phenom or swap over to Intel I5 build if just for gaming.

I wouldn't pay the premium for a 990FX chipset board unless you're really into performance tuning and want dual GPU support. The GA-970A-UD3P for ~$80 is hard to beat for a single GPU AM3+ system.

this..... yes an 8350 would be a great upgrade. but you need a stout 990fx board and a good cpu cooler and really good case ventilation.

You also can get GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev. 4 cheap on eBay. I bought one like new for $66 with a Sempron. Miners are selling them. The UD3 has nice heatsinks now and they are all attached by screws now. no push pins. Where have you been mdocod? Miss your posts.
