I've been using this external hard drive for almost a year. Recently it started acting weird--when it was plugged in it would suddenly disappear from My Computer, it took a very, very long time to browse it, then I started getting messages saying there was a problem with the drive "click here to scan & fix" I always clicked but kept getting the message. I went on line & started hunting for a solution. I downloaded WD's lifeguard diagnostic tool & ran it. The diagnostic took forever but suggested no fix (maybe it fixed it & I wasn't aware). I got no error messages for a while but the above mentioned "weird" stuff was still happening. It's a 1TB and less than half is used but I went in & erased some back up files for computers I no longer own, defragged the drive--it started running a touch faster but no other changes. Yesterday I desperately needed information on it & Everything went to HUHUM. My computer kept hanging up. I went to re-start it and it started updating...and kept updating all night. This morning I realized that the WD My Passport has been reassigned a new drive name from H: it is now F:. Nothing is working, explorer hangs up when the hard drive is connected. Please help! I've plugged the Hard Drive into a Windows 8 or 8.1 and Vista computer--results identical.

That's definitely not good, it sounds like your drive is failing or has failed already. :(
You should backup any important data which you might have on it if you are able to access it, but I'm afraid that in your case probably the only option you have for recovery is a data recovery company if the HDD is not accessible. Here's a link for our data recovery company partners: http://support.wdc.com/recovery/index.asp?lang=en
If your drive is still under warranty I would suggest that you get in touch with our customer support and see if you can RMA, here's a link where you can check the warranty services: http://support.wdc.com/warranty/index.asp?wdc_lang=en

Good luck with your drive.
Hey orlyk. Sorry to hear you're having such problems with your drive. What were the results from the Quick and Extended tests of the DLG? You could always try with CMD and dskchk to try and fix errors. Does the drive make any kind of unusual noise or anything abnormal when you connect it?
