So I decided to upgrade my ram from some g.skill 8gb (4x2), and went for 16GB (8x2) of Corsair Vengeance. My question is can i use both sets at the same time? Motherboard is Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 (rev. 4). It's got four ram slots (dual channel). The 8gb g.skill is 1333MHZ and the corsair is 1866MHZ. Will i be fine as long as i make sure they're in their own channels and the faster ram is in the first channel?

No. If you are to have a chance at using both sets, you will have to set all the ram timing parameters and voltage in the bios. Even then you may find problems. You will have to set the ram speeds in the bios to be the same for each set. It is never recommended to mix ram brands or models. The different channels makes no difference as the bios and MB components see all the ram as one set not on different channels. GL

You can try them together as long as you have them, would want to try with the 8GB sticks in 1-3 and the 4GB sticks in 2-4 - that gives you 12 gb in each channel - so yes dual channel would be active. Contrary to the above the MC (memory controller looks at the total in each channel - if it matches as it would the way I said to load the sticks, the it will run dual, if you had unequal amounts say 8-4-8-0 then if it supports flex mode it would be 16GB in dual and the odd 4 in single - if it doesn' do flex then in the 3 stick example all would run in single channel
