Alright so, I got this laptop from a buddy with a core i3 CPU in it and I had an i7 laying around (don't know anything more about the processors) and I tried to put the i7 into the laptop and it fit, but now when I turn the laptop on, nothing happens on the screen. So I was wondering if anybody knew the "science behind sockets" so to speak.

Any help appreciated

What's the i7s full name? If it fits, it does not mean it will be supported.

Depends if the BIOS supports it. If it doesnt it wont work. And whether it supports I7 cpu's

The i3 most assuradly pulls less wattage then the i7, so if it did work you'd have cooling issues.
The motherboard firmware was also probably never intended to recognize an i7.

What happens when you swap the i7 back out for the i3?

The motherboard socket will tell you what CPU socket type is supported.
The motherboard Northbridge chipset will tell you specifically what wattage and TDP designs are supported.

Any of these incompatibilities can cause a system to not power up and may even cause damage. Just because "it fits" does not mean you should have tried it.

There are a lot of sockets for i7's, and they dont work between them, post your cpu and laptop model so we can give you a solid answer.
