I currently have a 120gb SSD and 1tb HDD setup and I want to reinstall windows on the SSD (Format then reinstall). I want to keep the data and programs intact on my storage drive. Would adding the HDD as is into the system after the OS reinstall be fine and would I have to pretty much reinstall everything. The simplify it, could I : Unplug to data cable going to the HDD, boot up the system, make note of all the programs on the SSD, Format the SSD, Install Windows and programs onto the SSD and finally just replug in the HDD?

More about : reinstaling windows ssd data disk fine

Sure. Windows should detect the HDD automatically after you plug it back in and boot the PC.

You should be OK. I would install the ssd into the same sata port that the original boot hdd was in. Install windows, load all the MB drivers and get your comp up and running OK, then install the hdd into another sata port and you should have access to it, to do what ever you want with it.

Another thing, boot into bios just before windows install and make sure it is in AHCI mode which is best for a ssd. Save and exit bios booting into your windows install disk.

You'll probably have to reinstall several programs (or export registry keys from the hard disk and import them once booted from the SSD, but that may be very difficult).
