Fresh Elementary OS install for new hard drive

I have a brand new SSD for my netbook (Dell Mini10) and want to install Elementary OS. However, if I turn on the computer with the brand new hard drive connected, I get a "pxe-e61 media test failure" and "no OS installed." If I disconnect the hard drive things look more promising, but then I get an error that "bootmgr is missing." Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

pxe is used to boot from network.
I wonder if your boot order is correct...
Try entering the bios and change the boot order to boot from disk first.

Edit:
post bellow me is even better explanation.

If you want to install the new OS (Elementary), then you must boot from the install media, either DVD or USB.

Currently, there is no OS on that SSD. Go into the BIOS settings and change the boot order so you can boot from the DVD or USB, whichever you have.

Thanks for the speedy replies! I tried getting into the BIOS settings but for some reason can't get in. The screen tells me that pressing F2 and F12 send me to setup and boot settings, but nothing happens when I do so - it proceeds to the pxe messages.
I am able to stall the process for a second by hitting ESC as soon as the system starts up; I get diverted to another screen for a second or two. That screen appears to be listing components and has the F2 and F12 instructions again at the bottom. It's hard to read because it doesn't stay up very long! But even when I can manage to press F2 or F12 before the "ESC" screen moves on, nothing new happens. :-\

Try to press it several times right after you start the computer, another way to get around the issue is to bring up the boot menu. From there you can select the thing you want to use to install the new windows, and boot from it.

For the life of me, I can't get any boot settings or bios setup to appear. After doing some additional searching, I've tried using 0, tried fn12,fn11,fn10,fn9,fn8,fn2, all with and without also holding down ctrl. Am I just locked out??

There is no 'lockout'. Some key press will allow entry into the BIOS.

Ok! I cobbled together your advice with some others (apparently I pretty much was locked out because of the multimedia functions! http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/35...).

I tried using a USB keyboard, and LO I made it into BIOS and boot menu!

Alas, when it boots from the flash drive, I get the message "bootmgr is missing" and "Ctrl-alt-del to restart."

So how did you create that ElementaryOS install on the USB stick?

I used UNetbootin per Elementary's directions (I'm working from a different laptop running Windows 7)
http://elementaryos.org/docs/user-guide/creating-an-ins...

Maybe I should try burning to a dvd instead and using an external dvd drive. If that will work...

Success!!! Using a USB keyboard and USB dvd-rom/boot disk let me actually talk to the computer!
Thank you for the advice!
