hey guys, i just downloaded portal on my pc via steam, but it's running on DirectX 8 (showed in video settings), although my 880m are in DirectX 11, which leaves the intel HD graphics. So how can i run the game using the NVIDIA cards instead of these integrated graphic cards, cz the game is lagging a bit...

Solution
Hey there, i just had to do the same for a different steam game.

Go into your manage 3d settings on nvidia control panel, click add then browse.
Find your steam folder(should either be in programfiles or the x86 depending on 64bit or 32bit respectively, my game (skyrim) was in x86) then navigate from that folder steam>steamapps>common>(portal folder)
Then just set the high end graphics for each executable/application there just to be safe, unless you know exactly which one you need to change.

Hope this worked.

Pretty sure you can just right click the desktop icon of each game individually and there's a section with options to switch between on-board and nvidia. Otherwise go to your nvidia control panel and switch your preference for graphics use
