Steelseries 9H surround doesn't work well

So I bought a new pair of Steelseries 9H surround headphones to replace my ageing Logitech G35s. As some background for you guys - I've use the G35s in competitive Counter Strike for a while now and while the sound quality isn't overwhelming it's not bad and the surround sound it produces is very accurate when using the 5.1 ingame option with dolby 7.1 active.

I tried the 9Hs as soon as I got home with them, using the USB sound card provided with it - first thing I noticed is that the surround is very vague. Sound quality is pretty bad, direction is very hard to hear because it seems that all of the sounds, unless they are extremely far off, are basically right next to me, so differentiating between front-left and left is a lot harder than with the G35s. I tried the 3.5mm jacks into the USB soundcard and while the sound quality is a little better, it's still not great at all. Sound using the card is also very quiet.

I plugged the 3.5mm into my front headphone plug, but left and right were reversed. Plugged into the back and suddenly the quality was amazing, left and right were good, the only thing being that I can't use the digital surround in that setup.

So I'm stuck here - do I just try to get used to the average surround, or just use stereo? Or does someone else have a solution? (I've tried both USB2 and USB3, very little difference)

The other problem with this headset is that when using teamspeak, everyone else in it complains that they can hear a lot echoing back through whenever i push-to-talk. Using voice detection is even worse, when testing you can see that the volume of incoming audio is almost the same as my own speech, so there's no good threshold I can set it to so it picks me up but not the background. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance guys.
