Alright. I have searched every where and cannot find a definite answer.
I am currently building a gaming rig and plan on purchasing a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970
This card has
3x display port
1x hdmi
1x dvi-i
1x dvi-d
I also plan on using my 3 Asus VX238H (1920x1080) monitors in surround which only have hdmi inputs
I plan on using either 2 or 3 of the display ports but this is where i get stuck.
I clearly need a convertor, while reading up people say i need an active one, others say use passive convertor.
The only thing clear to me is that i can't use a passive convertor to go from HDMI to DP, but i can going from DP to HDMI.
What is the case? Can i just buy a Display Port to HDMI Passive adapter cord of eBay for all 3 monitors or do i require 3 active convertors

With your configuration you could use: DVI->VGA adapter for two of the screens + the HDMI port.
OR:
DP->HDMI adapter for two of the screens while the third is connected to HDMI.
I'd use something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Choose an ACTIVE adapter. I am personally running a 3x1 Eyefinity configuration (2xDVI+1XDP->DVI adapter) - you need active adapters. Not the most expensive ones (in the 100s of dollars range).

EDIT: It seems nVidia allows you to run with passive adapters, but I would definitely go with an active one, especially if it's gaming that you're aiming for.

So either this
http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Plated-DisplayPort-...
or
http://www.amazon.com/Accell-B086B-003B-2-UltraAV-Displ...
would work

Im guessing that if its infinity eye supported then it should be good for nvidia surround.
And yes I'm going to use this for gaming

You don't appear to need any adapters according to NVidia: http://www.geforce.com//hardware/technology/surround/sy...

I navigated to select: GTX970, single card, 2D surround

GeForce GTX 970 Single-GPU With 2D Surround (Landscape)
> Orientation: Landscape
> Accessory Display: Yes, no additional GPU (if using 3 or less displays)
> Maximum Resolution: 11520x2160
> Maximum Resolution (Bezel Correction): 10,240x1600
> Maximum number of displays: 2-4 in Surround, 1 Accessory Display when using 3 or less displays in Surround
Special Instructions:
> Any connectors can be used to enable Surround.
> Once Surround is enabled, users can use any
connector for the Accessory Display.
> Max of 4 displays can be used simultaneously (3 if monitors are 4K)
> G-SYNC and regular monitors can be mixed in Surround; effects of G-SYNC will only be seen on G-SYNC- enabled monitors

Note where it says:
"any connectors can be used to enable Surround"

So use:
1) HDMI to HDMI
2) DVI to DVI
3) DVI to DVI

*Or DVI to HDMI, if you have a DVI to HDMI cable or a DVI to HDMI adapter.

Apparently this should work.

I have two hdmi to dvi adapters, are these bi-way. Like i mean can they convert both ways. I am assuming that i can convert the dvi-i and dvi-d to hdmi?
