I recently purchased an asus vg278he 144hz monitor, and I am now getting very low framerates in games and even other applications. I have had a multi monitor setup for quite some time with both being 60hz monitors and have never had any trouble with framerate before. in fact, I ran a benchmark test with my previous setup, and averaged at 60fps; lowest dropped to 45fps for a second and the reading said my highest fps was 120+. I ran the same benchmark again with the same exact settings, this time with my 144hz monitor, and was averaging 20fps; lowest 17fps. this makes no sense to me. I have an evga gtx 770 OC 4gb

my previous setup was: dual monitors, main display LG 27" 1080p 60hz, secondary screen was a 19" scepter 720p 60hz. I would only play games on the main display and would only use the second display to hold all desktop icons and just use for extra real estate.

my new setup is: dual monitors, min display asus vg278he 27" 1080p 144hz, secondary screen is the LG 27" 1080p 60hz.

I planned on using the setup in the same manner as my old one just having more real estate on my secondary display, and using the 144hz as my primary monitor.

I don't understand how if my gpu can produce 120+ fps, my 60hz monitor can stay at 60fps and my 144hz monitor cannot even display over 20fps...

I am running no other programs on the secondary monitor and still having this issue. all drivers are up to date.

Solution

You should email Nvidia about the issue too so that they can fix it.
It's not just extra power but extra memory bandwidth. 144hz is going to take a bit over twice the memory because it's doing twice as many frames. Most GTX 770s only have GBs of ram. To add further to the issue, the 700 series doesn't have the best memory bus. Multi-monitor setups are not at all recommended on mid tier cards.

In this instance, it would have been a wiser idea to have an amd card. More memory bandwidth and better multiscreen support.

You should turn off vsync in any game you are playing and disable the second monitor.

Does it work fine with just the 144hz monitor? I would guess that it's something weird with frame timings between the two monitors causing your problem, since the greatest common factor of the two is 24, which matches up suspiciously well with the results you're getting.

If that's so you should report the issue to Nvidia. I've searched around the web for other people with dual monitors and different framerates and they don't seem to have the issue. You can find out real quick by just playing games with only the 144hz plugged in.

I fixed my problem. apparently it was an issue with the latest driver 344.11 which I actually just updated to the day before I got my new display. I reverted back to my previous driver version and im getting great framerate. thank you for your help though. just thought id update incase anyone else is having similar issues. it wasn't the new display, it was the driver.
