So my Radeon 7950 has broken and I was wondering if my PSU could handle a 7970, my PSU is a Super Flower 500w gold PSU. I asked a similar question if it could handle a r9 280x and people said that a 500w power supply could not. I was reading online and people say that if you don't plan on overclocking a radeon 7970 then 500w should be fine, however I thought that a 280x was the same as a 7970 so I was just making sure before I buy one.

Cheers

A 7970 at full load would require around 550W whereas a 280X would require about 600W. With either I'd recommend going at least 650W. Particularly if you plan to overclock at all.

Also I'd suggest the 280X as it's a faster rebranded version of it's previous generation counterpart.

Super Flower? What is that. If you own a 7970 and the super flower try it. The 500w should be able but I would buy a 600/650w from Antec, XFX or SeaSonic.

If i was him, get an other 7970 in crossfire with a better power supply and you could beat the gtx 780/r9 290x

Hi

The recommended for the 7970 is 500W but even so its way too close for comfort but its just for me :) , definitely don't overclock
If your overclocking with either cpu or gpu or both you need something like a 650W
For crossfire it'd be an 850W.

In the other hand, the 280x is kinda like a revamp/rebuff version and usually they come factory overclock, so they consume more power.

Just wondering what series is your PSU from super flower come from? If its from Leadex Gold series, then you might pull it off, the Super flower series mainly Leadex Gold series and platinum ones are good PSU's. They are also OEM's and used by EVGA for their SUper Nova Line.

Oh thanks Vic, xD its a non K, your definitely A'ight :)
