What is a dangerous temperature for my CPU?

First of all, I would like to thank anybody who takes the time to answer my question. I use Speccy to view my PC specifications and internal temperatures, when my PC is idle my CPU averages a temperature of around 52'C, yet after playing a particularly strenuous game (e.g. Alien: Isolation), it will be reaching temperatures of around 80'C. Is this normal? And more importantly is this safe or would I be best investing in some more heavy duty cooling systems?

Here are my specs:
Operating System:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1
CPU:
AMD A8-6600K 50 °C
Richland 32nm Technology
RAM:
8.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (5-5-5-15)
Motherboard
MSI A55M-E33 (MS-7721) (P0) 37 °C
Graphics:
CVTE TV (1600x900@59Hz)
2048MB ATI AMD Radeon R9 200 Series (Sapphire/PCPartner) 33 °C
Storage:
931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-1CH162 ATA Device (SATA) 31 °C
Optical Drives:
DTSOFT Virtual CdRom Device
TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-224DB ATA Device
Audio:
AMD High Definition Audio Device

Again, thanks in advance.

Solution

You are spot on.
AMD A8-6600K
So you he would also want to keep socket temps 80 or below.
Core temps again below 74 degrees Celcius. But you hereally want to be as far below 74 as you can be.
If you he using a stock cooler he should think of changing to an aftermarket one. If he has a decent Mid tower
he could go for a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO.

Download AMD Overdrive and check your thermal margin. I suggest reading Damrics sticky.

your good under 80 degrees, thats a bit hot for me but since amd cpus tend to run hotter i would say thats fine. if your hitting 90 though i would be worried. i would try to stay under 70 degrees but if you go up to 80 that is ok imo

the official temp maybe 74 degrees however AMD is knowen for having HOT cpus, i have herd of people running them at like 100 degrees. the below 80 degrees is just a general rule of thumb for most cpus

ya, great point(s) the lower your temps the better off you are so if you can try and get better themal paste like ic diamond or arctic silver 5 and a better heat-sink. 212 are great for the price and if you have more to spend noctua makes GREAT heatsinks and if money is not an object haha get a water cooler. colder the better!
