Using Old HDD

this is gonna be my first time building a computer and so far this is my build http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LKkgCJ

My friend said I can use my old Hard drive to save money but it has windows vista on it. Will that work? Or should i upgrade to windows 7 on this computer before I transfer it? Thanks

If you used the old drive, you still need to reinstall the OS.

Get an OEM version of Windows7 and do clean install.

Upgrading from Vista to Windows7 is not a good idea.

I dont quite understand, should i wipe my hard drive clean and use that for my new computer, or install it clean in the old computer?

The system first came out in 2009. Not sure how long you had yours.

Depending on the age of the drive and how hard it was used, it might be nearing his life expectancy.

Look at the SMART values for the drive. If it shows any errors like uncorrectable sectors, read/write errors, reallocation count, get a new drive.

start up your HP, and download and run Speccy. Under the Storage section you will be able to find the SMART values. Look at the Real Value column.

However, if the drive is in good heath, you could use it in your new system. When installing Windows7 it will show you the current partition layout on the drive. Delete all partitions on the drive until you are left with one line showing the size of the drive and unallocated.

It says it does not come with a sata cable, will my motherboard or case come with that?
