HDMI to VGA

Hello guys! I'm not entirely sure on how to have my HDMI graphics card without a VGA port go to my VGA monitor. (I will be getting a HDMI monitor soon but not when i get the GPU) What exactly do I need to grab?

You should have at least one DVI-I port on your graphics card. You can pick up for cheap (if one wasn't bundled with your video card) a DVI -> VGA adapter and it'll work just fine. DVI-I includes the analogue signal for a VGA monitor. DVI-D is digital only and won't work with a cheap adapter. Lots of cards have one DVI-I and one DVI-D so make sure you plug the adapter into the right port (they look the same, refer the video card manual if it's not labelled on the back of the card).

HDMI or DVI-D to VGA is a pain because you need a digital to analogue converter. They exist but they're expensive and you'd be better off just replacing your monitor.

Are you sure the monitor doesn't have a DVI port? I've been using a DVI to VGA converter for six years. The other day I discovered the monitor has a DVI port.

Thanks for the answers! My monitor does have a DVI port its the one with the minus sign. So should i just grab that type of cord vs getting an adapter?

yes just use dvi its the best unless you dont have pc speakers and want to use monitor / tv speakers ,
