Hi guys,

Just picked up a faulty computer for free today. Pentium 4, HP 085Ch (XU1 Processor) mobo, 1GB RAM. Wiped it, did a clean install of Windows 7 on it, and got it running. However, the motherboard, is running at 84 degrees C.

I'm assuming it is the fan, as I get a error message on boot about the fan (can't remember what the message is exactly), but I can't seem to find a replacement anywhere.

Does anyone know of any fans that are compatible with this motherboard?

Regards,

Jimmy.

First of all, I'd verify that the fan is or is not working and whether the RPM's on the fan increase as the temperature of the CPU increases. If any of those answers is no, check to see that the fan is correctly connected to the motherboard cpu fan header. If it is, then get a replacement fan. Here is a suitable one considering there are few options left for these socket 478 cpus nowadays. This unit will likely provide about twice the cooling capability of the original one. You might keep in mind that the problem could be something other than lack of cooling though.

An internally shorted CPU, old dried out thermal paste between the heatsink and cpu lid or poor case airflow could all be causes. Make sure all the case fans are functional and that there is no dust, gunk and junk built up in the fins of the CPU heatsink under the CPU fan.

Thank you for the very informative reply, darkbreeze.

I found out that the fan is not working at all, and the heatsink was clogged with dust.

Since I only really want to get this fixed to sell it off, will this cooler fit? It says it's 478 compatible.

Yes, most certainly it will. It is a socket 478 downdraft cooler just like the OE cooler.
