I was asked to recomend a card that would give most juice in the 200$ (+-20) range. I started looking and I noticed that in that range (happens also in the entry level) you can see cards from "famous" brands being more expensive than cards of an upper tier (and exceptionally even 2 tiers higher).

For example: I found that a sapphire 280x 3gb was cheaper than a msi 270x 4gb. And I was a bit surprised. I know that sapphire has not much "glamour", I read ppl refering to them as "junk", and that some other brands products are "adored" and considered "godlike" but from a pure value point, fps per $, how can they compete? Are those brand especifications so above "retail" products that they are worthy opponents to higher tier cards?

Resuming. From a pure power point of view what do you think is better? Getting the higher tier "crappy" brand or a good lower tier brand?

Personally I was going to recomend a "good brand" 270x. But after seeing the 280 for 15$ bucks (or even more) less I started doubting.

Thanks in advance to any reply.

well could it be there cheaper card is made with china parts and there more expensive card is all jap??

then again it use to be '' you get what you pay for'' but now a days that's a gray area

it now comes down to a roll of the dice on what you may end up with .. will you get a good item above the average or the unlucky lemon of the bunch??

Also maybe the higher price had something to do with the extra GB of memory.

heres a story for you to ponder

I bought a $249 sapphire card and used it for a month or two and I thought it was ok due to my old card just went down so after that month or two I bought a $120 powere color card for a backup/test something card . so it came in and I hooked it up to be sure it worked incase I need a rma or something and tested out just to find it was a better running card then the $249 one

benched better ran 10c cooler at far less fan speed so on

now that $249 card is in its box on the shelve as the backup card

go figure

The above story does in no way mean that cards made by sapphire are inferior to other brands. You may safely go ahead with buying the R9 280X.

true, just to make a point on what I posted above

they all make good as well as bad luck of the draw seems to play a big part in this stuff now a days and because it cost more it may not be the better

i'm no brands fan boy
