I started using a Samsung GT 7582 phone (4GB) from early March this year. By 7 Sept 2014 (in 6 months' time), my Gmail stopped working because of "no space". This sounded strange to me. Gmail is supposed to be a webmail service, so how could it take up all the space in a 4GB mobile phone? Have any one of you faced this situation with your Samsung phone? If yes, how did you resolve the issue? I would appreciate a response with a resolution of the problem. Thank you.

It won't take up all the space on your phone, but it will take up the remainder if you've used several GiB elsewhere.

It locally caches your most recent 30 days of messages by default, IIRC. Useful for reading email when not in coverage (tunnel, aircraft etc.), and shortens loading times.

Thanks a lot. This was useful information. In addition to 4 GB hard drive of the phone (2GB available for the user), I have an 8GB SD chip in the phone but found that except the photos, all others tend to lodge in the phone's hard drive. I could transfer some of the programs to the SD chip, but most of the programs are mandatorily in the hard drive. Could you please suggest if it is possible to push Gmail from the phone's hard drive to the SD chip? I tried doing this but found that this was not possible. Thank you.

I doubt it's GMail that's using all your space - "straw that broke the camel's back" is the phrase that comes to mind.

On my phone GMail uses a grand total of 13.15MiB.
