I have a hp pavilion g7 running windows 7 home premium. I have has this problem for a while now and have spent days reasearching it and cant get it to work. I have a western digital external hard drive. When i plug it in to my computer it does not show up in my computer. It shows up in device manager under disk drives and storage volumes. But when it is under storage volumes it is a generic volume and has code 32. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all the generic volumes and usb controller volumes. I have tryed to give it a new letter but it says disk manegment console is not up to date. I disable antivirus and firewall just in case. I have tryed system restore but it gives an error like it could not restore cause it was missing a file. I dont have a windows 7 disk or recovery partition but i am willing to get one if that will fix it. I have probaly spent 15 to 20 hours trying to fix it and have gotten no where. Other flash drives dont work either in it. I have tryed everysingle port. When i plug my phone in it work perfecly. My external drive works perfectly on my desktop so i dont know what could be causeing this.any help is appreciated

What is the full model of your laptop? There is more than just G7.

I'd start by making sure my BIOS was up to date. Also, I'd check for updates to the storage controller and usb controllers by going into device manager and browsing to those items. Right click on the storage and USB controllers (Separately of course) and select update drivers and update automatically to see if there are any available. I don't see anything on the HP website but that means nothing. Manufacturers often stop updating their product drivers after the warranty period.

You can press either delete or F2 (Whichever button is used on your unit to access the BIOS, google it if you don't know.) immediately after first pressing the power button until it goes into the BIOS and the BIOS version should be listed there.

The bios version is f.32 i had to press escape to get to a start up menu. Then i pressed bios setup. Then got to the screen where it told me the bios version

That's the original BIOS version. There have been about six updates to the BIOS since then. I'd highly recommend updating to the most recent version to see if it solves your issue which it very likely may.

Is it showing as version F.6A now?

Try updating the USB drivers located on the following page according to which hardware you have. You can check in device manager and look under USB or storage controllers to see which correspond to yours.

Alternately, you can go into Control panel, device manager and under each category of USB device controllers you can right click on it and choose update device driver, update automatically to see if there are possibly updated drivers that might correct your issue. Might do the same for the storage controllers or any remarked devices listed in device manager as well.

Too bad you had to do a full reinstall to solve the issue, but sometimes it's the only cure.
