Current build:
motherboard: gigabyte 970a-d3p
cpu: fx 8320
gpu: gtx 650 ti 1gb
psu: cx600w

I have a budget of $300
I was looking at a gtx 760, a 280x, and a 285. Should I save more and get a gtx 970? How long will it be until I need to upgrade from this new card?

More about : card

I'd advise saving for the 970, it's extra VRam will help for next gen resolutions and textures and pretty much matches the performance of the 290x while being insanely quiet and efficient.

As for the time you will have to upgrade, what games do you play?

If you can afford the r9 280x then you can definitely add another 50 - 70 $ for gtx 970 a much better and faster card it will make your PC future proof all the cards you have mentioned the r9 280x is the fastest among them and the gtx 970 is 40-50% more faster than the r9 280x and just cost you under 100$ more.
