I have upgraded my graphics card, and have a fairly decent PC (I rate) so I cannot understand how my friends with lower specs than mine hit higher FPS in cod (for example) than I do?

I upgraded my graphics card from a GTX 650 (Not TI) to a 2GB GTX 750 TI OC and I am still in the same refresh rate region of +- 170 fps.

My PC Specs:
16GB GDDR5 Gaming RAM
Quad Core Intel i7 3.5GHz 3770K CPU
MSI H77MA-G43 (MS-7756) Motherboard
256GB SSD
2TB Hard Drive (Secondary Hard Drive for backups) 500GB Hard Drive (Third Hard Drive for backups)
650Watt Thermaltake PSU
EVO Hyper 212 CPU Cooler Standard CD Drive

Please help as I would like to get more out of my PC when it comes to gaming!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Are you saying you are getting 170 FPS?

While I understand your "frustration", the reality is that this measuring contest is meaningless in terms of what you actually see. You're already at a higher framerate than your monitor can handle and your eye can see.

However, just make sure your graphics drivers are up to date, and that your chipset driver is as well.

I have done so, but I understand that there will not be a difference in what I see, however the game will perform better as if you have a higher refresh rate, everything is faster such as reloading, running, aiming, etc.

This.

Also, are you sure your friends are using the exact same settings as you? And is this happening in any other game?

Everything still happens at the same time as it does for your friends; you can't jump ahead in time. With a high FPS, you just get more frames.

Incorrect, it is as he describes.

There is a benefit in running games at high fps. Which is why competitive players do so. Even in a 60hz locked monitor.

A lot smoother gameplay, less lag, and even if he were to get fps drops in an area guess what? Still over 60 fps.

A lot of the branches of the military have tested human sight, the fps "limit" is FAR beyond even 120fps.

Yes, there is a difference, but I explained for what I thought he was saying. It's not like he is ahead of his friends. Sigh,

I don't know why you are saying there is a benefit with a 60Hz monitor, though. You can't see more than 60 frames with it, and any addition frames are being cut down.

Think of it this way:

Yes, even in 60hz locked monitors running over 60fps gives a much smoother experience.

Locking fps to 60 does not guarantee 60fps, you WILL get/notice drops below that.

Setting fps over 60 on a 60hz monitor could make it so the minimums -when you drop fps- never get below 60fps = much smoother game.

It also helps with input lag.

Have you happened to check his graphical settings? maybe he is running on low/mid settings, like resolution, texture quality, faa, etc. before you think that your system can not keep up with a system that is technically less powerful than yours, please check what you are demanding of your system and what is he demanding of his system.

also, run a web update of your directx package. some games use old code, which is optimized for directx sdk from 2008, 2009, and if you do not have those sdks installed, they will run badly in certain scenarios.

Good luck. and i would really like to know what the answers to my questions are.

And, some games do run better on different platforms. some run better on ATI, some on Nvidia. check to see what this game you are runing is better suited for and see if thats the card your friend is running. What are his specs anyway?

Think of it this way:

When his friends lag, and he doesn't it is in fact like they are frozen in time in comparison to him.

Having, say, 170 FPS vs his friends 200 FPS doesn't make a difference. While it's true they are getting more frames, they are both still at the same time in space-time. Those frames don't put you ahead of another person, you just see more frames (assuming your monitor can display them). You get more frames of the same image, with a lower FPS you get less frames but those frames are still of the same image.

If he was having actual lag, then it would cause problems.

Lets say his friends are 60 fps locked and he is at 120 fps.

Lag happens and their frames are cut in half.

Now they are running at 30 fps vs his 60 fps.

What do you think is gonna happen if they were playing something competitive?

He is going to have an easy time. XD

Of course he would, but that isn't the case here. I would be saying the same thing as you if that were the case.
