Hi!

This is going to be a fairly long read so please bear with me.

I have a 2 month old PC with the following components:

MOBO: Asus H87M-E
GPU: HIS R9 280X iPower IceQ X² Boost Clock 3GB GDDR5
CPU: Intel i5 4690
RAM: G-skill RipjawsX F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL
PSU: Seasonic M12 II Bronze 850w
CASE: Raidmax orion
OS: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit

I also use an APC battery back up to counter power interruptions, and re-used a Samsung DVD drive from my 3 yr. old PC.

I turned the PC off after watching a movie. When I came back, I noticed that I forgot to turn the APC and the PSU off. It then got stuck at the windows loading screen when I turned the power on.
I hit reset then I was prompted with 2 options: the first one to make a repair (forgot the exact wording) the second to start windows normally. I chose the first option and when it was finally done, it said that it could not automatically fix the error. I got the same result on my second try. When I got the same result on my third attempt, I decided to run system restore but the problem still persisted. When this happened the first time (last month), removing and putting the mobo's battery back somehow remedied it so I tried that again but it didn't work this time. I now attempted to isolate via hardware so I removed the GPU, still the same.

Then I thought maybe I'd just re-install windows. I put the disk in but there was no prompt to install. I checked the bios and noticed that the DVD drive is not detected, but the SSD and HDD are. I tried connecting the DVD drive to all 6 sata ports and it's still not detected but both storage are. When I removed the power cable from the DVD drive, windows booted normally...

I wanted to make sure if the DVD drive is really broken and is the one causing windows to get stuck so I used a different end of the power cable on the drive. I checked the bios then it's already detected and windows would boot normally. I then connected the DVD drive to the end of the power cable that originally powered it and once again it was detected by the bios and windows booted normally....

I put the DVD drive away even if windows ran normally with it installed.

I'm curious though, let's say my DVD drive is already faulty, can it actually affect windows from booting?

If my sucky case somehow has an exposed wire and is grounded to it's metal portion where the DVD drive was mounted, will it affect boot?

Would really appreciate some insight regarding this.

Thanks.
