Buyer's remorse over GTX 970

Hi,

I wanted to do a gaming build under Rs. 55000 but the budget streched and now it has become Rs.80000. I am temporarily staying far from home and planned to use my TV as the monitor. In HDMI it supports only 720p and 1080i (which i hear is bad for gaming) and in VGA 1024x768 max. In maybe a year or two I'll shift back to my home and the monitor there has the maximum resolution 1280x1024. I do not plan to buy a new monitor and plan to use these two existing devices. The problem is I had already ordered the Asus GTX 970 Strix but it looks like it's an overkill for the setup. Should I cancel it and go with SAPPHIRE R9 285 Dual-X which will lower the cost by 10,000? Is it a wise choice? Will I be able to play even the most demanding games at very high settings in the above resolutions?

Solution

The 750 ti will do good enough at 720p.

Look at it this way, if you are not buying a monitor that can support the video cards monsterous output for a while. Chances are by the time you get a monitor this video card won't be the latest and greatest. For now, just get a lightweight graphcis card for 10-20% of price of the GTX970 and it will be more than enough to support games for low resolution display you currently have.

When you have the option of buying a new monitor, upgrade your video card at that time to match it.

Hi thank you for the quick reply. My initial choice was a GTX 750Ti 2GB avilable for Rs.12530. My system specs are i5 4690k & 8gb ram. Can the GTX 750Ti 2GB play all the current games at very high settings in both the above resolutions? And, is that 2GB VRAM sufficient?

The R9 285 would be overkill too at 720p. You would probably have to go down to an R7 260 before it wouldn't be overkill anymore... But anyway, you want to have hardware that's a bit overkill because it will last you a lot longer. An R7 260 is just barely good enough to play today's most demanding games at resolutions higher than 720p. So I doubt it will hold up for 2 or 3 years. A GTX 970 on the other hand would last nearly a decade at 720p.

Maybe the GTX 970 will last but its price just doesn't justify (~Rs 29000). What about GTX 750 Ti?
