AMD vs Intel ... Is this the right choice??

There are other threads out there but this one will be personal to me. I am looking to custom build a gaming pc with a reasonable budget. I approached the "go to guy" at my college for advice and he came up with specs list which all seem value for money (http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/vkhjqs). Upon closer inspection he had selected an AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor. This seemed surprising as all the Youtubers I look up to have some version of the Intel i7; and the forums of the internet seem to agree. As some who only plays games I have to ask others. Is he correct in that the AMD will help, with video rendering I will face in editing, with its extra cores and the fact it's cheaper or should I go for an i5 or 7, even though I wont purely be gaming??

Additional Info as I dont know how to add a reply:
- I plan to go into making Seananners and GassyMexican-esque videos for YouTube so editing will be a major thing. So I require a balance as although a will be gaming alot I need the rendering power from the extra core to make them look pretty :)

My budget is around £800 but it looks like it will have to stretch but no more than the 1000 mark...

If you plan to do any editing, the 8350 will give you the best results. Video editing is cpu intensive, and unless you can afford the top tier I7 with hyperthreading, the 8350 is your answer.

If video editiing will not be a priority, and gaming is your thing, the k model of the I5 with a good gpu is the way to go. The I7 is overkill for gaming.

You can go two routes:

A xeon cpu -make sure it has HT- + h97 mobo = i7 performance for i5 price no OC needed. For both work and play.

For serious gaming you need an unlocked i5 + z97 mobo + aftermarket cpu cooler.

It all comes down to budget.

This would be a good starting point.

If you need a better ssd, or more fans, or a headset edit it within your budget. =)
