Hey guys! So I am planning on building my own computer but I've got a little problem. The main PC I use right now (I'm using it to write this) is on one side of my house and I want to put the new one I'm building in my room. I'm wondering if there is a way to connect my new PC to the same network. Do you need a router or a 2nd modem or can you only do it wirelessly? Thanks

if you have comcast or verizon as an isp there routers are also wifi units if they have the wifi ants on them. if they do check your wifi settings that there broadcasting. then on your new pc pick up a wifi card or usb stick and you be all set. if your cable or isp modem is just a plane router or modem. you need a wifi router. so it be cable modem------wifi router----to new pc from wireless signal.

Thanks Smorizio! I have a modem and belkin router already on one side of my house but my new pc is gonna be at the other side. So your saying all I need is a wifi card and I'll connect to the router easy?

Depending on your environmental conditions, it will probably work.
It might suck, but it will probably work.

Lol USAFRet. Is there anyway to have the same speed for both PC's? I've been trying to research this and it seems like you can't have 2 modems on one network so I'm just trying to figure out how this all works

2 modems, no.
Your ISP delivers one and only one IP address, to the first device it sees. A modem.
That modem delivers one and only one IP address to the first device it sees..a router. That router may be in the same physical box as the modem.

You have to be cognizant of the terminology. Modem, router, modem+router.....

For WiFi....every house is different. Once the PC is no longer right next to the WiFi source, things change.
In my house upstairs, simply walking down the hall 15 feet causes the WiFi performance to drop by 25%.

wifi is a radio link to the router. depending the distant and what your home is made from the range can be short or cover the whole home. look at power line kits or hi power indoor ap.
