I currently have a Sapphire Radeon R9 270 Dual-X in my custom build, and I have overclocked it a bit, but I am not getting quite the performance I want. A lot of my games dip below 50fps on high and ultra settings and I want to play at these settings with 60fps or more. First of all, will Crossfire-ing with another Radeon card give me a performance boost if I am gaming on a single monitor? Second, should I Crossfire with an identical card or should I Crossfire with a slightly more high-end Radeon card?

One card is always more functional and performs better in some games so you should sell the cards and get a more high-end card.

You should sell the 270x for about 100-200$, and buy something like a 970 or a 290.

EDIT: Misread and though OP was talking about 270X Vapor-X, my bad.

Unfortunately nobody's going to give your more than $100 for an R9 270 especially that the new ones sell for as little as $150 .

My answer is to go for it provided that you have enough horsepower in your PSU to deliver to your system then it will give you the performance boost you're looking for to remain above the 60 FPS mark , just don't expect twice the performance rather 5/3 of the initial performance ( might be more or less but around that figure ).

Its preferred to crossfire the same exact card in order to avoid issues arising from CFX .

In an ideal world you'd want to get the best single card that you can get however since you already own one I am not going to tell you to go ahead and sell it , lose your money then spend more again . That's just plain nonsense , the best option you have is to crossfire.

Hope I've helped.

Or you can Crossfire and sell both cards, but by then, the cards will be worth a fraction of their value today.

yes , you will get a massive performance boost if you crossfire easily hit the 60 fps and over mark , it'll have to be an identical card... make sure your psu has ample wattage :)
