hello community,
i wanted to know if it is possible to change one graphics card to a qudro k1200m or k1100m in the alienware 18. As this laptop has dual graphics card slot. and does it work if it is connected to a GTX 860m in SLI................. i want a powerful mobile workstation to mostly do 3D animation in maya and after effects

You can only SLI identical series nVidia graphics cards eg gtx680 with gtx 680. Not GTX860M with Quadro K1200M

Pretty much what Baby said. There are instances, usually with AMD where you have slightly more options, like say for an R9-280, you can crossfire it with of course a 280 but also a 280X/7950/7970.

Also, I'd strongly advise against trying to do any laptop work yourself, especially if you had to ask these questions to begin with.

You don't need sli to have multiple cards. It's possible on a desktop to have gtx and quadro (even have amd mixed in too) but I've never really seen anyone try it on a laptop since there are so few dual slot laptops. However, I would still be against it considering a 860m is better than a k1100m. There is no such thing as a k1200m. You also have to be careful about switching mxm cards as it might not be compatible with the mobo. You can't even have 860m sli and quadro if you only have 2 slots, that's 3 cards.

i didn't know that you could only use SLI with same graphic card....i mostly use Adobe products so i need CUDA core support so AMD is out of the question......i am a student so i need a portable solution...My friend has this Alienware 18(New version) and im trying to buy it off him...so i thought if i could take out one graphics card and put a qudro in there so i could both use it as a workstation and as a gaming machine...plus it is all the setup i need because i dont want to spend on a separate Desktop PC...

The 2100m is still lower performance than a 860m. Don't do it, this is a downgrade.
