Hi guys,

Having extreme difficulty re-installing steam, and some applications no longer function. Here's some background. Everything was fine, enjoying some quality vidya but stupid me, i attempted to use my motherboards (AsRock) XBoost auto overclock feature. Doing this resulted in repetitive crashes of my system and i was forced to power down my pc. I kept rebooting until i was able to disable this terrible XBoost feature. However once i had done this, and ensured my CPU, GPU and RAM frequency's were normal, my computer has been acting wack. Opening up steam worked but the client was flashing (from foreground process to background window) and attempting to launch a game resulted in "unable to sync with the cloud, launching game will lose progress" error. Scared to lose my progress, i attempted to find a solution on the forums. Most people recommended re-installing steam. Having done this many times before in the past i went to do so. However, when i highlighted the steam files (deselecting SteamApps and Steam.exe) and hit delete.... nothing. Right clicking and clicking delete resulted in the progress graph appearing (windows 8.1) but the files remained after it said it was complete. I tried these methods in safe mode also, to no avail. I have tried flushing the config, no effect and any attempt to launch steam results in a long wait to install steam updates followed by the error "fatal error ... FileSystem_stdio.dll ...". I have tried deleting this specific file but that does not work either. An Avast full system scan revealed nothing. I have even gone so far as to restore my system to a state a few days earlier and this did not work either. I have also changed the permissions on all of the steam files to allow full control and this had no effect. Please if anyone could offer help i would be greatly appreciative, this is so frustrating.

Thanks

Thank you so much!

Tried to run malwarebytes but each time it attempted to run a scan it would crash. Here i was worried that i did indeed have a malware problem. After scouring forums for this issue, i updated malwarebytes malware definitions on another computer (which would crash the program on affected pc) and transferred these updated files to the affected computer. Running a scan found 13 malicious files which i promptly sent to oblivion. Now i was able to delete MOST of the files in the steam folder. I Just needed to use Unlocker to move the other two folders that couldn't be deleted out of the steam folder. I then ran steam.exe and now have a working client :)

Thanks again 3odgy!
