Solution
It should work. try 2 sticks first and enable XMP profile1 and they should be set automatically at 8-8-8-24, 1600MHz dual channel. If voltage does not set automatically at 1.65V it is easy to set up to that V. After you get 2 set up and running, try installing the 3rd stick.

You could even try all 3 sticks at first and see if you can boot into bios. That memory is decent. Has a good tight timing, CAS8. If they run Ok and they should, you might want to maybe find 1 more of the exact same model and have all 4 sticks in dual channel mode. But there is no guarantee that mixing sticks like that will work, even if they are the exact same. Best to have a kit of 4 sticks.

Thanks for getting back to me spooky,i sort of knew there was going to some issue with it because as you've noticed its triple memory for 1366 board, knowing i can use 2 of them makes sense and putting hem into dual , can ask what you'd recommend when i go to replace them does z97 do quad channel or dual ? and i may as well ask you what you do with £450 $725 in regards to upgrading my system would you go for gtx 9 series or would you recommended I7 4970K with main board ?

thought maybe i should give my actual system specs
CPU - I7920 C0/C1, stock speed
MAIN-BOARD - ASUS 6PTSE,
RAM - CORSAIR 6GB MODULE SIZE 2048 PC3-10700H (667 MHz) CM3X2G1600C8,
GRAPHICS CARD - GEFORCE GTX 580,
HD'S 3.5 320GB,3.5
1TB, 240 CRUCIAL SSD M500,
PSU - OCZZS650W
Was thinking of overclocking the i7 920 is it worth it ? will it bottleneck bad with gtx 970 or 980 ?

That i7 920 will most likely handle a GTX 970 or 980. You may need to OC it some to get the full 1600MHz from your memory. Those X58 boards & CPUs used standard default memory of 1333MHz. Those sticks will work good with the new components you are thinking about getting. Just not triple channel. There is no XMP setting in the X58 BIOS but look at the memory multiplier and see if there is an option for 1600MHz. Maybe you can set the memory to that plus the 8-8-8-24 timings.

If you decide to upgrade the memory, look for a decent 2x4GB kit or if you want more, a 2x8GB kit. The 4970K and asus board should be able to handle 1866MHz memory with out OCing the CPU any. The lower the CAS latency, the better too. Your new Z97 system that you are getting is only dual channel memory but will be a large improvement over the X58 system you have now.
