Hi all, my mate is installing a 2nd GTX 770 Dual classified card, they take 2x 8 pin PCI-E cables each. He has 3 of these cables on hand but cannot find just a PCI-E at Canada Computers or Tiger Direct. Canada computers informed him that all PSU cables are brand specific. He does have access to a PCI-E cable from another modular PSU from a different brand. Is this true that they are brand specific? Or is he able to use the cables from another brand PSU totally perfectly? As in, if the plug fits? Concerns are that it may fry a $500 card or burn out the PSU. Thank you very much in advance for any advice you can offer.

The plugs on the PSU end are a proprietary shape so it won't fit. Even cables from different series but the same brands are often different shapes, such as the EVGA G2 and P2 series cables are the same but they are different from all other EVGA PSU's.
He'll probably need to contact the PSU maker to get another cable if he can't buy one. What PSU is it? I know EVGA, Silverstone and Corsair sell cables for some of their units.

I wouldn't do that, the reason you need so many pins is those graphics cards need well over north of 200 watts. If you try to use rainbow/daisy chain of cables you might fry something.

With the doomsday warnings asside, I am using a GTX770 right now with http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ALK3KEM/ref=oh_aui_... using 1 x 8 pin and 1 x 6 pin ports (shown on the picture in link on bottom right of the power supply facing the power supply as it is in the picture. Using the cables that came with the power supply.
