Firstly, I don't want a fanboy love\hate thread going on, that's not why I'm asking.

The general consensus (at the moment) is that Intel is 'better' than AMD but what I want to know is why?

What is it about the current generation of Intel chips that makes them outperform the AMD equivalents?

Please try to keep your comments constructive and unbiased.

Thanks.

The easiest way to break it down is like this.
AMD: More, overall weaker cores, however cheaper. Performs better in some multithreaded tasks.
INTEL: Less cores, stronger overall architecture, better gaming experience.

It simply comes down to intel offering better single threaded performance. AMD placed their money that games would start to use more cores when their FX lineup launched, intel took the other path. Needless to say, Intel had the right idea.

If you have the money to spend intel will offer you more raw performance, but it comes at a premium.
AMD is the better budget option where intel runs performance.

I don't like the overall "better" statement - I believe both AMD and Intel have CPUs that are better at doing some tasks....AMD is definitely better on the budget side - and Intel has the ultra high end market cornered. Not everyone is a gamer - and not everyone runs high end applications. By definition, I am an "Intel Fan-Boy" - but yet when you look at my 5 computers in the house - I have 2 Intel Core-i-7's.....and 3 AMD based computers....

Why? Because for the chosen task, the 3 AMD computers were the best at what they did....and the 2 Intel computers are the best at what they do....

Kind of like this. A Corvette is a cool car - it goes really fast. But gas mileage sucks, and maintenance is very high dollar, not to mention the initial price. A Toyota Prius is not so cool.....and it only goes fast downhill.....but gas mileage is great....maintenance is low, and the price is about 1/3 of the Corvette. Which one is better?

Well, if you are racing - the Corvette. If you are driving 20-30 miles per day each way to work, and you don't make $250,000 a year, the Prius is the best.....

You both make good points, and I agree about the 'better' as it's all subjective depending on what your requirements are. Was just curious from a technological stand point as to why Intel was (for lack of a better word) 'better'.

In Support to Gam3r01

Intel uses smaller Nano Technology in there processors which improves speed at the same or lower Clock speeds
Allowing it to run cooler and use less power - Allows for greater overclocking
Intel Also runs on a higher buss speed which improves overall user experience

AMD offers Better Bang for buck typically until you get into High End Processors
If your on a budget or have a specific use for the AMD technology its a good choice

I'm Glad there are two CPU mainstream end user manufactures, that compete, so we have the choice to get a decent processor at the price we are willing to pay.
