I have a RAM problem. I just booted up after a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA bsod, and Chrome's been crashing pages (presumably due to bad memory), so I'm pretty sure it's bad RAM. I've had problems with this rig before, and everything's been replaced more than once except for the RAM. I'm currently running 8 gigs of Patriot Viper Extreme 1600 mHz (with the non-connected heat fins, if that matters), and I would like to stay at minimum 8 GB. Any reccomendations (or suggested amounts of RAM for a gamer)? Please let me know! Thanks for any help.

Run a RAM test before assuming RAM is the issue.

Check your ram with memtest86.

If faulty, RMA it.

Try GSkill Ares 1866 1.5v 2 x 4gb cl9

You should use Memtest86+ to see if the RAM is bad for sure first.

However if you come to replace it, you will want to go to pcpartpicker.com and just select RAM and the cheapest 2x4GB RAM kit. It often changes every few days.

You don't want anything more than 8GB total really, as Windows won't make any use of it unless you are running multiple virtual machines or doing other very specific work loads. Games and most other work won't consume more than 6GB.

Thanks, everyone! So, how do I use Memtest? I poked around on the site, but I don't see a specific set of instructions (I'm not very good at using new software correctly). If I understand correctly, it's some sort of BIOS supplement? Sorry if this is one of those cringe posts on /r/PCMasterRace, but I just don't know.

You download it, install it on a USB key usually, and then you boot to it. It kinda does the rest on its own, and has a list of errors at the bottom. If you see more than like 2 errors then you can pretty much go ahead and stop it, as perfectly fine working RAM doesn't typically have any. Though bad RAM typically will quickly climb into the hundreds or thousands

Thanks. Do I need to format the USB stick first, or as long as the stuff is on there it'll boot?
