Just built a new system with Windows 7 64 a i7 4790, 2 PNY 970 gtx, Samsung 250 gig ssd, 8 gig ddr 3, and a Asus z97-a MB. I did transfer my old power supply from my last build into this system which was a 1000 watt Rosewill modular that had been running a 2500k and HD 6990 build. I only had one 970 gtx so went ahead and built the new system while i waited for the other to arrive. The system ran fine and put the correct numbers up in 3d mark Fire Strike and Metro Light Bench test. I know the card was good and system stable. Let me also mention nothing is overclocked AT ALL.

So moving along my other PNY 970 gtx comes in and I install it and connect the sli bridge. I run 3dmark/heaven and Metro benchmarks and the numbers and performance reflected SLI (they were good!). My fps were 80-85 in 1440 P Max setting in Metro light Bench Mark. Well I ran it a few more times then suddenly the FPS dropped in the benchmarks bad! They were actually worse than a single card run. Then random rebooting would occur in the middle of the benchmarks. And if the benchmark did make it through a run the score was very very low.

So even though nothing is overclocked I tested for heat issues using GPUz and MSI afterburner!! My cards didn't get above 65 C. I have totally eliminated a overheating problem so its not that.

So then i thought maybe the card i just got in was bunk. I took out each card and ran them in single mode by themselves. I didnt even leave the other card in the 2nd sli slot. Both cards ran 3Dmark, Heaven, and Metro benchmarks in 1080 p just fine as they should. No reboots or drop in fps.
Games like metro ran fine in 1080 p and 1440 with settings toned down. But in SLI they ran like crap. 1440 was sluggish.

So it seemed to me both cards are fine alone they only acted up in SLI mode.

Ok so then I suspected the power supply since its a few years old. I had a new Corsair 750 watt modular I had stored away.

SO i changed power supplys low and behold it worked or so it seemed. I was back to getting a average of 80-85 fps in Metro bench mark in SLI and I got no reboots. 1440 played smooth in metro on high settings. Most of the day went smooth. Then boom it happens again the bench marks tests in SLI are sluggish again, like slide shows and when I try to play a game in sli in 1440 its low FPS!! Same thing my old power supply did but without the rebooting issues.

Both cards are PNY 970 gtx and nothing in the system is overclocked one bit. I know both cards work fine in single mode. I know ive tried two different power supplys and they both did the same. Even though it seemed fixed with the newer PS it started back again. I went in safe mode removed all nvidia drivers and reinstalled drivers. Same thing. Only thing I havent done is a totally reformat, which im gonna try now even though it was already a fresh install. When the sli worked i was geting 80-85 fps in the Metro bench marks at 1440 max settings. When they stopped i would get the same ebnch mark at 30-35 fps in sli mode! SO as we speak i have 2 new 970 gtx in sli that are only getting a crappy 35 fps in Metro bench mark at 1440!!! Im baffled as to why they run fine and seem to work then BAM all of a sudden they stop running correctly in sli.

Im baffled and lost as to why they perform in sli fine and run and look great then boom the bench marks and games start to drop suddenly and randomly like i were running a single 970 if not worse and never go back to running right!!

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Im goona do a clean wipe of drive but if that didn't work id like to have some ideas of wtf is going on!! If the wipe dont work only thing left is the MB it would seem. I know my system memory is good. I know the cards ran SOLO are good. I know they have both ran in SLI good for a very limited time before they start acting weird and dropping performance incredibly!

Thanks friends..

I am suspecting it's a mobo issue: when you went and changed the PSU, you were unplugging and plugging in stuff, had time to allow the capacitors in the mobo to discharge, which somehow gave you the "refresh". have you changed any mobo settings (doesn't have to be OC). if not, see if your mobo vendor has a new firmware or bios up, it might help.

Edit: you're using the newest system from intel, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a recent update

Your processor isn't strong enough enough for SLI. Only the new Pentium 4 processors can handle that kind of power.
