I bought this CPU, but I don't know what "Delidded" specifically means

I bought an i5 4670k that has been delidded by the seller. The description:

"CPU has been delidded and had internal thermal paste replaced with CLU (Coollaboratory Liquid Ultimate). In my experience this really increases overclocking headroom by lowering temperatures up to 10C."

Is the CLU supposed to be some sort of thermal compound for better heat transfer? I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be buying my own thermal compound or just installing a cpu cooler as is.

Deliding a CPU means removing the "lid" by prying it open (it's held by glue) and then cleaning the low quality thermal paste that comes preapplied between the metal lid and the CPU, and then applying a higher quality thermal paste.

After this process is done the lid is only held together by the pressure of the heatisnk you put on top of the CPU so you would need to apply thermal paste on top of the CPU lid.

You will need Thermal Compound for the Cooler, he just replaced the Material under the Cap. 4670K's had heat issue so I guess this was a DIY way around that.

You will still need paste for the cooler, they simply replaced the thermal grease under the "lid" (Or IHS). This can help lower temps, because there are essentially two layers of thermal paste before the heatsink actually takes the heat away. Issues like this are removed with the newer refresh models (4690k) because intel soldered the IHS to the CPU die.

I all truth, I would never buy a "delidded" CPU from anybody other than I good friend I knew well. About a third of the time when people "delid" a CPU, they end up ruining it. You stand a chance of purchasing a dead unit unless you've seen it run and pass stress. You're much better off just buying a newer and NEW CPU.

And just to add - if your CPU cooler is new it usually comes with thermal paste so you can just use this one. If you have used the cooler to another CPU previously you will need to buy some thermal paste too.

It has a huge temperature improvement because:
1 - Intel used bad thermal paste between the die and the IHS (Integrated heat spreader)
2 - Intel has bad clearance between the die and IHS. Once the glue is removed, the IHS can sit much closer to the die and get better mounting pressure and thermal transfer.

And another great point.
