At school I have a friend whose wifi (boarding school) is shut off at certain times. He says that you're still connected, but there is no data. Basically an empty wifi channel.

Are there any tests or programs that anyone can recommend for him to try out? Perhaps wireshark can find... a hidden teacher's wifi, if it exists?
Would a ping test do much?
The only details I can provide at the moment are probably that... you can stay connected, but just that no data is going through.

1) No, we can't really help with bypassing the school's security.
2) Wireshark is the wrong tool. Not going to tell you what the right one is.
3) Perhaps your friend should look into getting a cellular data card or something, or tethering his phone.

Meh. Tethering really doesn't support most games.

I don't see it as bypassing school security, but as utilizing their resources more, since their shutdown time restrictions are very aggressive. However, if this isn't the best place to ask about this, please tell me.

Their connection, their rules. Play by them or don't use it.

Not sure why games wouldn't work on tethering - same amount of NAT. Somewhat worse ping, but WiFi...

Huh? What's nat?

NAT = Network Address Translation. The bit that often breaks stuff requiring real-time communications, like games and VoIP.

If their IT guys have 2 cents worth of brains you will not be able to get past them. Lets say they have the wireless network hooked to a firewall that connects to the internet and the turn the power off on the firewall but leave the wireless network powered on. How do you think you can do any thing to bypass that. Completely on/off type of security are the simplest to configure and have no way to defeat when properly configured.
