After using the same computer for 4 years, it is time for an upgrade. I was set on buying the Asus GTX 970, but AMD cut their prices into the realm of sanity. It seems that the 290X outperforms the GTX 970 by a few frames with the 290 not far behind.

$350 Asus GTX 970 4GB
$290 Sapphire R9 290 4GB
$370 Sapphire R9 290X 4GB

All three of those cards look desirable and able to play games at 1080p. I think I may buy the R9 290 for its best bang for the buck, but what do you think?

If every frame matters to you, then pick up the 290x but, all of them will exceed 60 fps on every game max settings.

Considering the 970 uses nearly half the power, the price still needs to come down before I'm interested. $300 290X might peak my interest. $370? Nope.

If price is no issue at all, go with the r9 290x. If 20 dollars are a lot to you and the electricity bill shouldn't be to high go with the 970.
