So I'm looking into getting either a 2nd r9 280x or upgrade to a single gtx 970.
I currently use mantle for battlefield 4 and average80-100 fps using 1080p 135% res. Scale. Everything ultra. These settings nearly max my 3gb GPU ram.

I am confused as if I will actually see a notable performance increase with the 970 since the 280x uses mantle and is more optimized and the 970 uses directx or should I just grab a 2nd 280x? I also plan on upgrading to a rog swift monitor in the future.

Current set up:

Fx8320@4.6ghz
R9 280x (single)
8gb rip jaws
120gb ssd

Ive researched many benchmarks and reviewz but am still unsure which would be better..280x/mantle vs 970/directx.

Any input will be valued.

Thanks!

If you are looking at getting a rog swift, you will need the extra VRAM of the 970
In crossfire, you can still only use the 3GB of ram of a single 280X (ram does not combine)

So, I would sell your 280X and buy a 970 or 980 - your pick

Since you have an AMD CPU you will have some benefit from mantle.
Personally I would just get a second 280X since you already have one

i dont think 280x can achieve 80-100fps on ultra.

1st - He said using Mantle.
2nd - The chart posted is old, the game and catalyst drivers with Mantle have been upgraded.
3rd - The chart is are little strange, I have a 8350 @ 4.5 and r9 290 and I get around 80fps of average on DX11 1080p

I'm leaning towards a gigabyte or strix 970 so far. With overclock should blow 280x out of the water.

Thoughts?

Not likely with that CPU. Truth is AMD CPUs struggle with games like BF4.
The real reason AMD created mantle

maybe just keep your current 280X? that is if your primary gaming time only with BF4. personally i won't let stuff like mantle would be the reason why i'm choosing a specific set of GPU since mantle support will not available in all games. and it is more so for multi gpu configuration. just look at sniper elite 3. mantle support only comes a few months after game release and there still no proper support for muti gpu config in Mantle (DirectX crossfire works just fine)
