I've bought a new laptop with 8.1 home installed, does this mean I can't install 7 using the key from my previous one?

Meaning I need to buy a new key if I'm to use W7 on my new laptop, even though I already own one. I'm just checking that I'm understanding this correctly, it seems quite bizarre to me.

This guide seems to suggest that I can only use the Windows 7 key from my old laptop if I've got Windows 8 Pro installed.

before you do check to see if there drivers for it and the laptop hardware supports the down grade a few laptop vendors ware that some of the older os wont run on there laptops. before you wipe and reformat your laptop...have you tried classic start menu and make window 8.1 run and act like windows 7???

I'm not so much unhappy with the interface (I actually quite like some of the features), it's just that I'm getting just about every common Windows 8.1 problem in the book (black screen on startup, driver power state failure BSOD) and I'm getting a bit over it.

I just checked and yes it is compatible with Windows 7.

But as for my question, do you know if I should be able to downgrade using my old Windows 7 key even though I'm using Windows 8.1 Home instead of Pro? Or am I going to have to buy a new one?
