He's going to pick up a standard $50 mobo, nothing fancy. But that's factored into the budget, what's left over is about $150 for a processor

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated

One other thing I wanted to ask is, he plays mainly Teamfortress 2 and World of Warcraft (WoW doesn't like to make much use of more than 1 core, not sure about TF2)

I was wondering, would he be better off getting a fast dual core processor, say a i3-4350 or would he be better off getting a quad core AMD FX-6300?

If he were to go with the quad core would he have a performance loss due to the games not taking much advantage of multiple cores?

Even the RECOMMENDED CPU requirement the teamfortress 2 is a single core CPU. But deciding upon dual or quad core depends upon the game he's going to play in near future. However, the dual core will affect performance when the game highly recommends quad core.

If you're going to choose AMD, the FX-8320 is a high end AMD CPU for the exact budget of 150$. Or the FX-6300 for 109$ is even good for what your friend needs. Do you need a motherboard? if you already have one, what is it?

He hasn't picked up a mobo yet, we were going to figure out what processor to go with first before getting to the motherboard

It is better to consider the overall cpu performance. The six core would be better. If you go with the 8 core you will need a better than 50 dollar Mobo. Again the dual core's only advantage is single threaded applications.

The FX-83xx chips are basically a quad core PCU with multi-threading, so it's basically going to perform like an i5. For the money, it's worth getting on a tight budget. I'm confused as to why they are commonly called "8 core" chips, because they just aren't. There's a reason they perform like quad cores in video games.
