I have the ga-78LMT-USB3 motherboard and I want to know what my best option is for graphics. I have a £400 budget but would rather spend less if possible

The best bang for buck at 1080p is arguably the GTX 970, but as it's still new, prices are quite high.

Will this work with my motherboard? Or would I need to upgrade that?

It will work just fine. You won't get the speed of PCIe 3.0, but very few games actually utilise the extra bandwidth in a meaningful way.

Thanks for the quick reply really appreciated. How would it hold up to games like crysis 3?

It should do very well at 1080p; 60 fps should be possible depending on how the rest of your build stacks up.
