Recently my 3TB Western Digital Drive sata connector on the hard drive(the plastic part around the pins) snapped off since the sata cable which I was using was sticking out just slightly out of the case and the side panel was putting constant pressure on the connector, thus resulting in it snapping.I did not realize this since when I put the side panel on it didn't feel like anything was in the way, it was only when it wasn't detected in Windows that I knew. I contacted Western Digital, and although it says on there website that they will not warrant the warranty if the sata connector is broke, they said they will replace it. I sent the 3TB Western Digital Green hard drive a week ago, today I received the replacement. However the drive which they sent says "Re-certified" and is not labelled as a "Green" drive. I was wondering what is a recertified drive, is it brand-new or a hard drive which was sent in by another customer and repaired?. The model number is WD30EZRX and the drive looks like this and it does come up as a Western Digital Green

Re-certified stuff is usually from when a customer sends it in as broken and there's nothing wrong with it - user error.

OK thank you. So does that mean that the drive which Western Digital sent me isn't new (although date stamped 9th October 2014, guessing that was when it was refurbed)?. Also the warranty for the drive is only valid till February next year instead of 3 years?

Usually the warranty would be valid until the warranty of the original drive expires.

Hi there haroldj97,

WD's recertified drives are customer return units. All of them go through extensive testing before they are re-sent out as replacements.
Regarding your warranty questions, I would say that the warranty is valid until the warranty of the original drive expires, just as Someone Somewhere mentioned.

Modern drives often fail with bad heads. If a 3TB drive with 6 heads has one or two faulty heads, it may be recertified as a 2TB drive after disabling 2 heads. The process is called "selfscan".

Personally, I would be very wary of recertified drives.

WD will honor the original warranty or 6 months, whichever is longer. I wouldnt hesitate to use the drive. My last recertified WD drives, from a pair of failed original WD Green drives, were replaced with the ezrx model and have been running fine in my server for the past 3 years without any issues. WD has done alot to improve these drives IMO.
