Recently my 3TB Western Digital Drive sata connector on the hard drive(the plastic part around the pins) snapped off since the sata cable which I was using was sticking out just slightly out of the case and the side panel was putting constant pressure on the connector, thus resulting in it snapping.I did not realize this since when I put the side panel on it didn't feel like anything was in the way, it was only when it wasn't detected in Windows that I knew. I contacted Western Digital, and although it says on there website that they will not warrant the warranty if the sata connector is broke, they said they will replace it. I sent the 3TB Western Digital Green hard drive a week ago, today I received the replacement. However the drive which they sent says "Re-certified" and is not labelled as a "Green" drive. I was wondering what is a recertified drive, is it brand-new or a hard drive which was sent in by another customer and repaired?. The model number is WD30EZRX and the drive looks like this and it does come up as a Western Digital Green

OK thank you. So does that mean that the drive which Western Digital sent me isn't new (although date stamped 9th October 2014, guessing that was when it was refurbed)?. Also the warranty for the drive is only valid till February next year instead of 3 years?

Hi there haroldj97,

WD's recertified drives are customer return units. All of them go through extensive testing before they are re-sent out as replacements.
Regarding your warranty questions, I would say that the warranty is valid until the warranty of the original drive expires, just as Someone Somewhere mentioned.

WD will honor the original warranty or 6 months, whichever is longer. I wouldnt hesitate to use the drive. My last recertified WD drives, from a pair of failed original WD Green drives, were replaced with the ezrx model and have been running fine in my server for the past 3 years without any issues. WD has done alot to improve these drives IMO.

I have a real problem with their warranty replacement program. I had a drive go bad that was a little over a month old and got my replacement today. I got a recertified drive too. I just think this is wrong and you should get a new replacement drive when you only had for a very short time. I know that the store I bought it from has a 2 week return policy and if returned you get a brand new drive. They should take in consideration how long you owned the drive.
At first when I open the box I was surprised because I sent in a 2Tb drive and they sent me a 3Tb drive until I saw it was recertified.

I fail to see your issue. Not that we can do anything about WD's policy, You now have 3TB instead of 2 and still maintain the original drives' warranty.
My replacement drives (listed above) were 3 yrs old back when I posted that comment. Its now 2018 and they are... still going! Over 7 yrs running!

If you wish to take your issue further, please contact WD directly. As said, there is nothing we can do to influence their policies and their staff no long visit these forums sadly.
